Reinhard Kleist is a Berlin-based graphic designer and illustrator and one of the most successful German comic writers of our times. He has published graphic novels on exceptional figures in sports (Hertzko “Harry” Haft, Emile Griffith, Samia Yusuf Omar) and pop musicians (David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Nick Cave) among others. Kleist will discuss the significant role of memory in his two graphic novels centered on professional boxers, Holocaust survivor Hertzko Haft and Emile Griffith, who fought his whole life against racism and homophobia. Kleist will discuss his work with Associate Professor of German and Oakley Center Director Christophe Koné.
